Asters
Often known as the Michaelmas daisy, Asters are a frost hardy, bushy
perennial which bloom in most parts of temperate and sub-tropical
Australia from early summer through to autumn. At the end of the
season it brings welcome colour (and butterflies) to the garden.
Asters perform best in moist conditions, although they also tolerate
drought conditions quite well. They are low-maintenance and easy
to grow. Remember to add lime when growing them in acidic soil.
Cut the finished flower stems to ground level for repeat flowering.

‘Cerise Selection’ |
We pulled this one out of
a group of seedlings. It’s shown no signs of mildew
during a wet season and flowered for ages. A rich dusky cerise
flower, very reliable and pretty when matched with soft mauve
and apricot colours in the garden.

Hostas
Originally from Japan, China, and
Korea, Hostas grow best in morning sun and afternoon shade. They
are a great low-maintenance and hardy addition to any garden.
We were told we could not grow them
here on the mid-north coast of NSW because it was too hot. Well,
they actually do very well as long as they have light shade. It
is important to add lime to acidic soils. Hostas love compost.

Agapanthus
Agapanthus, or Lily of the Nile,
is another gorgeous and hardy perennial that grows in most temperate
and sub-tropical regions in Australia. They like full sun and rich,
well-drained soils. The roots do not like being disturbed.
We have about 10 varieties here in the nursery, but this little
guy is a favourite.

Ifafa Lilies
These little guys from the Cyranthus species,
commonly known as Ifafa Lilies, are very hardy and drought tolerant.
They form tight clumps and are a great feature in a woodland setting,
rockeries or pots – in fact they often do best when pot-bound.
They also like full sun, good drainage
and nice rich soil with lots of humus. They can produce an incredible
nine months of flowers if they are happy, and will take frosts to
about -6C. We’ve been growing them for many years, and they
always light up the colder months towards the end of winter and
early spring.
