Plants
Sarracenias, or Pitcher Plants, are a strange
yet wonderful carnivorous plant and a fascinating addition to any
garden. We’re one of the few nurseries in Australia that propagate
them, and after 15 years we still marvel at their unique plastic-like
flowers and stems when they flower in early summer.
Another native of North American swamps, they
like full sun and are very frost hardy.
Usually grown in pots, they can be grown in the ground provided
the conditions are right – a three to one mix of peat moss
and sand. Do not try and grow in potting mix. In pots you can substitute
coconut coir fibre for the peat. Rainwater is best for watering.
Pitcher Plants die back in winter and can be allowed to dry out
a little. Just cut back the old stems with scissors.
Most varieties are available in only
limited numbers. We have other hybrids available in the nursery.
All are flowering size.
